I’d have to say Vejer (vey-hare) also known as White Village or Pueblo Blanco was my daughter Caitie and I‘s favorite of all our stops in Spain. It wasn’t even on the radar for us until we took a locals tapas tour in Cordoba with an incredible tour guide named Jose (Cordoba blog post to follow with more details on Cordoba including his must do, amazing locals tour!) until he recommended it as his place to go when he travels. Again, solidifying the theory that usually the best way to find the true gems is by getting your information from a locals perspective and not a brochure. *insert high fives* :)
We had to make some adjustments to our itinerary but it did NOT disappoint! This incredibly picturesque hillside village in Southern Spain is just a few miles from the coast and the famous Cape Trafalgar located in the Cadiz province of Spain. Here you can experience traditional and historic Andalusia. It is a truly magical place, where the views alone are overwhelming and the meandering cobblestone streets are virtually carless. The architecture still recalls the Moorish rule, (which lasted from 711 until 1248) where some parts even reminded me a little bit of Chefchauen ~The Blue City in Morocco only painted white instead of blue. It's no surprise the influence here is strong, as on a clear day you can actually see the Moroccan coastline in the distance!
If all the charm and beauty isn't enough to engage you, how about knowing they get about 300 sunny days per year?!
Staying in Vejer, just down the road (*8km) you will find some of the best white sandy beaches at la playa del Palmar, beautiful mountain views and you can even swing your clubs at the world famous Montenmedio Golf and Country Club.
There are a great choice of boutique hotels and B&B's, some of which have even been featured in travel magazines. We stayed at Hotel V which is a boutique hotel located right inside the historic village. With only 13 beautifully appointed rooms, a rooftop terrace that includes, killer views (as seen in my photos) a hot tub, lots of comfy seating and possibly best of all...an honor bar. For fellow yogi’s, they’ve got that covered as well!
There is a town center called Plaza de Espana, Its other name of Plaza de los Pescaítos is due to the fish decorating the central fountain. This gorgeous square (although its not square) complete with its charming tiled fountain adorned with fish and water spouting frogs is beautifully lit at night. In addition, the huge palm trees, surrounded by amazing shops, cafe's and restaurants just give it a great night time vibe.
When it comes to gastronomy, which has become one of the most important hallmarks of tourist, Vejer offers a delicious culinary scene especially when it comes to my favorites..seafood (with Spain's tuna capital just down the road and being just a few miles from the Atlantic there is no shortage of fresh fish) and Spanish wines. There are cooking classes, wine tasting and tapas tours available as well which I highly recommend doing.
Since we were limited on time, we didn't have the opportunity to visit the must see restored windmills and castle ruins (both offer free entry!)... as if I needed a reason to go back!
oh and did I mention it's still not overly crowded?! The time to book is now.👇
